In the event of pending severe weather, the Conway Springs Police Department will unlock the basement door of The Foundation Building for community members to take shelter. The basement entrance is located on the south side of the building, near the front stairs (see image above and to the right). Residents without personal shelter are encouraged to create a “go bag” that is easily accessible, and create a family plan for safely and swiftly getting to The Foundation Building basement, and take shelter until the threat passes.
The basement provides shelter, and also has a children’s’ room with toys and activities to keep the little ones busy during the stressful time. The basement has two restrooms, a kitchen with working water, and plenty of space for a large crowd to wait out the storm.
Those seeking shelter are encouraged to stay away from all windows and doors during the severe weather, and wait for an “all clear” before leaving the basement.
